Information about Eid al Adha
Muslims celebrate this at Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Adha is called Id-ul-Adha in Arabic and Bakr-Id in the Indian subcontinent, because of the tradition of sacrificing a goat or “bakri” in Urdu. The word “id” derived from the Arabic “iwd” means “festival” and “zuha” comes from “uzhaiyya” which translates to “sacrifice”.
Eid al-Adha or “Festival of Sacrifice” or “Greater Eid” is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma’il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. The meat is divided into three parts: the family retains one-third of the share, another third is stored and the other third is given to the poor and needy. Eid al-Adha is the latter of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, the first being Eid ul-Fitr. Like Eid ul FitrEid, al-Adha begins with a prayer followed by a sermon. Eid al-Adha is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the 12th and the last Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah of the lunar Islamic calendar. Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months and 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah
Eid-ul-Azha celebrates in the remembrance of Prophet Ibrahim who makes himself ready to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah, God intervented to provide
prophet Ibrahim with a sheep to sacrifice. So every year muslims of the whole world celebrates this festival very joyfully
in the remembrance of prophet Ibrahim.
Muslims celebrate this festival with full joy and happiness. They wear new clothes offer prayer and sacrifice sheep
cows or camels with the remembrance of the prophet Ibrahim’s love for Allah. Muslims believe they obey the same Prophet Ibrahim who
is very near to the God.A day befor eid muslims of all over the world gathered in the Holy kabbah, the house of ALLAH
and offered hajj. This festival means alot to all the muslims of the world. So they celebrate it with their family and friends.
Eid Al-Adha, means “The Feast of the Sacrifice.” An animal is sacrificed, in much the same way that Abraham sacrificed a lamb. One-third of the meat is given to the poor, and the rest goes to the holiday feast. Children get gifts to commemorate the holiday, and special prayers are said throughout the day.
Eid Al-Adha takes place on the 10th and last day of the Hajj, the celebration of holy pilgrimage to Mecca, in the 12th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. (In 2012, this is October 26 on Western calendars.) Muslims the world over are encouraged to make a pilgrimage to Mecca and celebrate.
